Born in 1587 Willem Ysbrantsz Bontekoe was a Dutchman who travelled to the East-Indies from 1619 to 1625. His journey took him to various places in the Indonesian Island, Macau, China, and Taiwan. Each place that he stopped by is described as also is given a snapshot of the daily life of the inhabitants. That time being the era of the spread of colonies, Bontekoe was witness to a fair number of naval and land operation which he does not miss to describe. The book is translated from the Dutch by C.B. Bodde Hodgkinson with an introduction and notes by Pieter Geyl.
