After Tamerlane: The Rise & Fall of Global Empires, 1400-2000
Tamerlane was the last of the ‘world conquerors’: his armies looted and killed from the shores of the Mediterranean to the frontier of China. Nomad horsemen from the Steppes had been the terror of Europe and Asia for centuries, but with Tamerlane’s death in 1405, an epoch of history came to an end. The future belonged to the great dynastic empires – Chinese, Mughal, Iranian and Ottoman – where most of Eurasia’s culture and wealth was to be found, and to the oceanic voyagers from Eurasia’s ‘Far West’, just beginning to venture across the dark seas. After Tamerlane is an immensely important and stimulating work. It takes a fresh look at our global past. Our idea of world history is still dominated by the view from the West: it is Europe’s expansion that takes centre-stage. But for much of the six-hundred year span of this book. Asia’s great empires seemed much more than a match for the intruders from Europe. It took a revolution in Eurasia to change this balance of power, although never completely. The Chinese empire, against all the odds, has survived to this day. The British empire came and went. The Nazi empire was crushed almost at one. The rise, fall and endurance of empires – and the causes behind them – remain one of the most fascinating puzzles in world history.
After the Quake
Tales of upheaval and confusion, longing and love in the aftermath of the Kobe earthquake.
For the characters in after the quake, the Kobe earthquake is an echo from a past they buried long ago. Satsuki has spent thirty years hating one man: did her desire for revenge cause the earthquake? Miyake left his family in Kobe to make midnight bonfires on a beach hundreds of miles away.
Fourteen-year-old Sala has nightmares that the Earthquake Man is trying to stuff her inside a little box. Katagiri returns home to find a giant frog in his apartment on a mission to save Tokyo from a massive burrowing worm. ”When he gets angry, he causes earthquakes,” says Frog. ”And right now he is very, very angry.

Afterlives
Restless, ambitious Ilyas was stolen from his parents by the Schutzruppe askari, the German colonial troops; after years away, he returns to his village to find his parents gone, and his sister Afiya given away.
Hamza was not stolen, but was sold; he has come of age in the army, at the right hand of an officer whose control has ensured his protection but marked him for life. Hamza does not have words for how the war ended for him. Returning to the town of his childhood, all he wants is work, however humble, and security – and the beautiful Afiya.
The century is young. The Germans and the British and the French and the Belgians and whoever else have drawn their maps and signed their treaties and divided up Africa. As they seek complete dominion they are forced to extinguish revolt after revolt by the colonised. The conflict in Europe opens another arena in east Africa where a brutal war devastates the landscape.
As these interlinked friends and survivors come and go, live and work and fall in love, the shadow of a new war lengthens and darkens, ready to snatch them up and carry them away.
Agnosticism: A Very Short Introduction
What is agnosticism? Is it just the ‘don’t know’ position on God, or is there more to it than this? Is it a belief, or merely the absence of belief? Who were the first to call themselves ‘agnostics’? These are just some of the questions that Robin Le Poidevin considers in this Very Short Introduction. He sets the philosophical case for agnosticism and explores it as a historical and cultural phenomenon. What emerges is a much more sophisticated, and much more interesting, attitude than a simple failure to either commit to, or reject, religious belief. Le Poidevin challenges some preconceptions and assumptions among both believers and non-atheists, and invites the reader to rethink their own position on the issues.
